ABC San Diego member Helix Electric brought home honors from the 27th annual Excellence in Construction® Awards during National Workforce Week in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. ABC honored 98 projects collectively worth $2.4 billion with National Eagle and Pyramid Awards.

Helix Electric received its National Pyramid Award in the category “Electrical: Commercial Projects $2 to $10 million” for its work on the new NBC7 San Diego television studios.

“Our team, particularly our field superintendent Michael Stilwell, really had to stretch itself and put all its creativity and expertise to work to meet the client’s desire to create the kind of television broadcast studio and production facility which would carry it well into the 21st century,” said Eugene Blyumin, project manager for Helix Electric. “With technology changing so rapidly, this was no easy task. It was only possible thanks to our shared goals and teamwork with the general contractor and the client.”

The NBC7 San Diego project broke new ground for broadcasting technology and facility design and construction. This advanced broadcast center is leading best-in-class news coverage nationwide.

Walking into the stunning new state-of-the-art broadcast facility, you might imagine yourself on a futuristic starship. The 52,000 square-feet design features open-space design features a first of its kind multi-screen video wall, state-of-the-art news sets, production studios, and two control rooms that contain advanced audio and video production systems to create news and entertainment programming on-air and digitally.

While the visual design and functional capacity is impressive, NBC7 also required the studios to meet or exceed all energy-efficient design standards. In order to meet the requirements, LED fixtures are used throughout the building with a sophisticated lighting control system. The facility’s 144kW PV systems installed on the roof and carport, and 250kW BloomEnergy fuel cell system, along with a 1000kW generator allows the station to run completely off the grid. Thanks to a strong relationship with the client, Helix Electric’s forward-thinking approach contributed to a complex project being delivered on time and on budget. The complexity of the sophisticated electric systems and use of multiple renewable energy sources combined with a tight construction schedule were all executed over a fast paced six months from start to completion. However, the commitment to safety throughout the project was never sacrificed.

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year's panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the Construction Users Roundtable and the National Association of Women in Construction and higher education.
